Language programs in college

Do you want to continue foreign language study in college, or begin a new language? Indiana colleges offer many options for language study with majors, minors, and electives.

Increase your marketability with future employers by pairing a language with another course of study. For example, you can double major in political science and Arabic, or engineering and German. Or add a language minor to any of the following areas:

  • Business
  • Healthcare
  • Hospitality or Tourism
  • Journalism
  • Law
  • Information Technology or other technology fields
  • Public Affairs or Political Science
  • Social Work and Counseling

Some Indiana colleges even offer “language for specific purposes” courses such as Spanish for the Health Professions and Business German.

For an international focus, consider a major or minor in:

  • Geography
  • International Studies
  • International Business
  • Anthropology
  • Area/Country Studies

Ivy Tech even offers certificates in Global Studies and Global Workforce Skills

Learning a second language and understanding how hard that is will provide a great deal of empathy for clients who might be struggling with that themselves. That's one thing I definitely look for in my future employees.
